Fitness Facts
Winter Workout Tips
Fitness goals are one of the first things to fall by the wayside as the New Year wears on. If you resolved to get buff only to have already become a fitness slacker, there’s hope! Here are a few easy way you can get moving again...
- Stimulate the economy: Do you have a gift card left over from the holidays? If so, think about using it for a new piece of exercise equipment. You don’t have to buy big and expensive, whole-body exerciser. Instead, think smaller, like hand weights, a pedometer, a jump rope, stretch bands, or even an iPod or mp3 player. Any one of those can add a whole new dimension to your workout.
- Check it out from the library: Don’t have the money in this tight economy to join the gym or hire a personal coach? No problem. Some of the top fitness experts and trainers in the country have wonderful DVDs that will guide even novices through their routines. And the great thing is that you don’t even have to pay for the chance to learn with them. Just head to your neighborhood library and check out the DVDs that interest you. Then try expanding your choices with some exotic variations. You might want to try a Bollywood-style exercise DVD, which uses exuberant dance workouts based on Indian music and Bollywood choreography. Or maybe you’d rather swivel your way to being fit with one of the DVDs that features belly dancing. Let your imagination run wild! Then strike out on your own. Once you’ve learned their routines, you can forego their DVDs and simply do the steps on your own, for example, when you’re watching the news or your favorite show. Think of it as a kind of fitness multi-tasking.
- Go to the mall: If you show up at your favorite mall before it opens, you’ll find that the doors of the mall itself are usually open, and you can walk free of icy hazards and inclement weather. Mall walking has really taken off in a number of cities, and what’s great is that you can shop for great bargains as you walk the malls inside perimeter!
- Consider a cause: If all you need is just a little extra motivation, this may just be the answer. Instead of working out just for yourself, join one of the many causes that sponsor annual benefits. There are a number of national groups that help breast cancer, MS, arthritis, diabetes, etc. All of these hold annual events like walks, runs or even triathlons. Or, if your interests are more local, check with your local animal shelters or nature centers to see what’s upcoming. These walks can be as short as a mile or as long as a marathon, but if you start training now, you’ll definitely be ready when the time comes.
- Celebrate the cold: That’s right! If you’re lucky enough to live in a part of the country where winter temperatures dip and snow falls, take advantage of the many outdoor activities that are unique to this time of the year.

Rewrite Your Holiday Eating Script
Contrary to popular belief, holiday gatherings are intended for celebrating; not just eating...
In the book Mindless Eating, Dr. Brian Wansink describes the “scripts,” or subconscious habitual eating behaviors, that we’ve all developed since childhood. These tendencies are largely dependent on the people around us. Family and friends have a strong influence on what and how much we eat. For instance, research shows that if you eat with one person, you tend to eat 35 percent more than if you ate alone. With four other people, you tend to eat 75 percent more. And with a group of seven or more people, you will eat nearly twice as much—96 percent more. All these extra percentages add up. By eating just 500 extra calories per day, a person could gain one pound in a week. Why not “re-script” your holiday celebrations with these healthy patterns to avoid weight gain:
- Eat breakfast daily: Include at least two ounces of protein every morning to help stabilize blood sugar and control your appetite for later on in the day.
- Eat before you go: Skipping meals can lead to eating high calorie and unhealthy foods. Prepare for ultra-busy days by keeping healthy foods nearby, such as a protein bar, apples and low fat cheese sticks, or other healthy snacks.
- Follow the one plate rule: Only eat as much food as you can fit onto one plate when attending buffets and parties.
- Drink water: The calories in beverages add up quickly. Avoid sodas, alcohol and high-calorie mixed drinks. Having a glass of sparkling or still water (with a lemon or lime wedge) in your hand most of the time will help you eat (and drink) fewer calories.
- Veggies are the best choice: Focus on the vegetable dishes. They are the lowest in calories and the most filling. Have steamed vegetables instead of casseroles and try substituting raw vegetables and low-fat dips for higher fat appetizers.
- Eat mindfully: Holidays are about enjoying time with people. Don’t rush your meal. Savor the flavors and textures of each bite. Allow yourself to relax and eat slowly, enjoying the company. It takes twenty minutes for your brain to realize that you are full, so eating slowly helps prevent overeating.
- Exercise: During exercise, endorphins are released which elevate your mood. You may think you don’t have time to exercise, but working out will reduce holiday stress, help keep you fit and maintain your weight.
This season, be proactive and be prepared. Rewrite your holiday eating script and start the New Year on a healthy note!

Human resource
Have a Respectful Holiday
Whether you are celebrating a Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Eid ul-Adha, Happy Kwanzaa, an all-purpose Happy Holiday, Festivus, or nothing outside the deep discounts and sales available in relation to all of the above, it’s almost impossible to ignore the holiday season...
This is the time of year that has Human Resource professionals wringing their hands, worrying about offending one group and overlooking another in the mad scramble to honor cultural differences and remain politically correct.
The fairly generic greeting of “Happy Holidays” has gained in popularity over the recent years, serving as a neutral ground between the various observed holidays for your clients, vendors and business connections. A little more caution is due to your coworkers who might not celebrate anything at all around this time of year. Often, coworkers reveal their values in relation to holiday activities at work through everyday discussions relating to office coverage (who wants which holiday off or has no preference) or may feel comfortable enough discussing their family holiday traditions or religious beliefs openly in the workplace. When this occurs, it deepens the understanding coworkers have of the similarities and differences, but it shouldn’t be created artificially through forced “sharing.”
When decorating, private employers are allowed to display religiously affiliated decorations so long as they don’t favor one religion over another. Public employers are limited to secular decorations such as snowflakes and candy canes. If an employer bans decorations entirely to keep everyone happy, they must enforce the ban throughout the year; not allowing any red hearts to sneak in during February. A complete ban can also prevent heated discussions related to one holiday or another from flaring up and causing issues between employees. For instance, Thanksgiving, typically regarded in American culture as a day for giving thanks for our country’s founding and all we are grateful for in life, is regarding as a day of mourning in some Native American cultures.
It’s important for employers and employees to look at these concerns as holidays arise for different cultures throughout the year, resulting in requests for additional time off, accommodations for fasting, prayer or religious items in the workplace. In general, a focus on the individual, rather than the company’s policy, is crucial for respectful communication surrounding holidays. And while it can result in additional responsibilities, a diverse workplace brings value to its employees.

Make Your Memories
Have you ever seen a child on Christmas morning playing with the wrapping more than the actual gift? There is something about the season of stuff that we all easily get bored with...
I recommend that we avoid giving more stuff and instead, gift an experience. A kayaking trip, watching a performance, whitewater rafting, skiing or a massage will all create great stories that live on. Look to LifeBalance to see what types of gift experiences are available and make a moment and many memories.

LifeBalance From Within
Give Yourself the Power
Your power depends on your perspective. And your perspective is yours to choose...
If you convince yourself that you're having a bad day, you will indeed experience a frustrating and unproductive day. If you assume that circumstances are allied against you, then you'll encounter great trouble in getting anything done. There is a much more powerful alternative. You can choose to adopt and embrace a perspective that will work for you rather than against you. Think of how you would feel if conditions were perfect, if your actions were highly effective and if everything was going exactly your way. Then, once you imagine how it would feel, go ahead and allow yourself to actually feel that way. How would you act today if you knew you were going to be completely successful? Go ahead and act that way, and the success will come. Put yourself in a position of power by choosing to feel the positive influence and effectiveness that you know is yours. Adopt the thoughts, feelings and actions of success and you will indeed bring success to life.
