HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Ringing in 2010

Ringing in 2010

Many of us start the New Year by focusing on a new goal. Perhaps it is to begin a weight loss program, to try new fitness activities or spend more time with friends and family. Regardless of what the new goal may be (or if we’ve even set one), most of us could certainly use a little more balance in our lives and a little more money in our pockets. With your health and happiness in mind this year, use LifeBalance Program savings and ideas to help you ring in 2010!

A BALANCED YEAR
Resolve to Make Your LifeBalance in 2010

Find Balance

Focus on maintaining a balanced, fulfilling lifestyle by doing activities you love and keep you feeling great. Here are just a few ideas:

Fitness Facts
Fitness Tips for the New Year

If you want big improvements in your fitness level, eating habits or other areas, you may feel you have to take drastic action. However, quite the opposite may be true...

Setting Reasonable Goals

Many experts believe that the best way to ensure lasting improvement is to take on one small behavior change at a time. The idea is to commit to reasonable tasks, not ambitious ones, and develop positive habits over time.

An easy approach to this strategy is the "One-Change-a-Week" model. Make a list of the behaviors and healthy habits you'd like to develop. Start with the ones that will be easiest for you, and gradually work up to the more challenging ones.

Your choice of weekly goals might include these:

  • Eat one extra piece of fruit per day
  • Add 5 minutes to each workout
  • Meet with a personal trainer to create an exercise plan
  • Buy whole-grain bread instead of white
  • Do one extra workout per week
  • Take raw veggies (carrots, peppers) to work for snacks
  • Eat breakfast every day

By the end of a month, you’ll have made at least 4 important health changes and you'll feel even more motivated to continue to make other changes needed to reach your goal.

Another idea is to try personal training. Having a personal trainer may seem like something only wealthy celebrities would indulge in. Nothing can be further from the truth. One of the best goal-setting strategies is to consult a personal trainer in launching your fitness plan. A personal trainer can help establish a series of specific, measurable short-term goals; and create a customized exercise plan that will help you succeed.

Staying on Track

If you have trouble staying motivated to exercise, you might achieve greater success if you make exercise part of your routine, something as ingrained as brushing your teeth, getting showered or driving to work. The more "automatic" exercise becomes, the less you'll have to grapple with how to fit it into your busy schedule.

How do you do that? Keep in mind that your health is not a temporary change to be made; you're making this choice for a lifetime. Your teeth need to be brushed regularly in order to keep them healthy, right? Same goes for your body. Get into a routine you like and stick to it!

Plan ahead for eating and working out. Plan out which days, types of food and times in advance. Use the MyLifeBalance Activity Planner to schedule your workouts and get motivated in advance). Have the gym clothes, equipment and nutritional balance ready to go as planned. In order to fully prepare, make sure you are both actively and mentally prepared for your workout/nutrition schedule. Book your meal plan and workout schedule weeks ahead of time so that you can be prepared for the commitment of doing both.

Every time you work out at a higher level, record your progress in your exercise journal (Take advantage of the MyLifeBalance Activity Tracker or Walking Tracker to record your workouts). Did you go up a level on the elliptical trainer? Did it take you less time to run a mile? Are you using 10lb dumbbells instead of 8lb? No achievement is too small! Writing it down will help you see your progress in print and keep you coming back for more!

Give it Time

Do you find yourself continually starting exercise programs only to quit just weeks later? If so, you could be asking too much of yourself in terms of motivation.

Yes, you can make noticeable, satisfying improvements in your physique in as little as a month. But it's important to understand what kinds of changes are possible (and which goals may not be realistic within that time frame). Here are 4 guidelines for achieving results:

  1. Lose weight gradually, no more than 1 or 2 pounds a week. It may not seem like much at first, but you could be 8 pounds lighter after a month.
  2. Lift weights! Regular strength training plays a huge role in weight loss. It builds lean muscle mass, which increases metabolism (i.e., you burn more calories). Bottom line: If you want to see results quickly, make sure you're doing both cardiovascular and strength training.
  3. Give up the "spot reducing" myth. You cannot lose body fat primarily from your stomach, thighs or other trouble spot. Our bodies lose fat proportionately.
  4. Know a "body fat" problem from a "muscle tone" problem. If you want highly defined muscles, you won't be able to see them as long as there's a layer of fat hiding them. If you're carrying excess pounds, you need to lose weight while toning your muscles through strength training.

Perhaps one answer is to look at motivation as another "muscle." Just as biceps, core and glutes gradually strengthen as they are exercised over time, so does motivation grow stronger with practice.

Lastly, and critically: Choose workouts you like! It's extra hard to motivate yourself do to exercise you don't enjoy.

Ring in the New Year with Resolutions You Can Achieve

January is National Staying Healthy Month, a great time to resolve to be healthy. Don't know where to start? Try some of these strategies from Jenny Craig to create attainable New Year’s resolutions with maximum effectiveness for a healthier, happier life...

  • Get Real - Make goals that are attainable. Resolutions like “lose weight”, “get organized” or “help others” are not measurable or explicit enough. Make them specific to your life. Change “get organized” to something like “arrive 5 minutes before scheduled appointments for 1 month”. “Help others” can be revised to “volunteer once a month”.
  • Set Mini-Goals along the way - Meeting milestones along the way to your final goal will give you a sense of accomplishment and fuel your motivation to keep going. If your goal is “lose 1-2 pounds per week”, add something like “until my brother's wedding” to start with. Also, plan for non-food rewards for each time you reach a milestone, like a new outfit or a leisurely day with your favorite book.
  • Choose Your Tools - Use tools to stay on track with your resolutions. For weight loss goals, try online journals like those available to you with your MyLifeBalance account. These tools will allow you to watch your progress and monitor trends over time. Whether you prefer to use the paper calendar on your office wall or your virtual wall in your MyLifeBalance account, make sure it's a place you'll check regularly.
  • Get Support - Find a friend, family member or professional to be your cheerleader. Your support person should be someone who has your best interest at heart and maybe even some of the same weight loss goals. Another great way to rally up support is to use program savings on a personalized Weight Management Program.

New Year’s Trends for 2010

Following a year of such economic and political turmoil, employees and employers are looking ahead to trends for 2010. With fears of a continued recession easing, it seems a fine time to look forward to next year’s hot issues....

Social media will increasingly impact both employers and their employees. While continuing to keep an eye on risk management to protect company brand, confidentiality and employee safety, employers are beginning to see the benefits available to them through their employee’s use of social media to spread the word. Often, a company’s greatest spokesperson is a proud and well informed employee who understands their responsibility to safeguard trade secrets and uphold the organization’s reputation.

Companies, led by their employees as much as their customers, are going green in 2010 in the hopes of capturing green. Many organizations are starting green committees within their employee base, designed to help the company run lean and green. These efforts focus on everything from recycling and waste reduction to the introduction of sustainable energy and eco-friendly products such as solar panels on roof tops and biodegradable kitchenware.

Rough economic times lead to a greater need for charity and businesses and their employees are leading the charge. Efforts range from donated assistance to individual employees to much larger charitable fund raisers for established organizations such as the United Way, Red Cross and food banks across the nation. Corporations are growing increasingly concerned with cuts to public school funding and are throwing themselves into mentoring, funding and volunteering within schools across the company to ensure that the workforce of tomorrow has what it needs today.

After doing our homework over the last decade, Americans have learned that to keep up with the rest of the world, we need to be operating 24 hours a day. This trend presents challenges for managers and employees asked to interact with colleagues and customers around the world at all times of our day and night. Access to 24 hour child care may become an expected benefit of our more global organizations.

These trends and many others will mean continued flux in the year to come for both employees and employers, along with a great deal of opportunities to capitalize on change and growth.

LifeBalance From Within
Think Success

To be successful, think of yourself as successful...

Then act on your positive thoughts. The biggest difference between sloppy incompetence and brilliant excellence is in your attitude. Truly respect yourself and the work you're doing, and that work will bring results of great value. The thousands of thoughts you think each day form the filter through which you experience life. What is your filter keeping out, and what is it letting into your world? Your choices determine the direction your life goes. And those choices flow directly from what you are thinking. Think success, think achievement, think positive, empowering thoughts of fulfillment and joy. Think of the most desirable possibilities and construct in your thoughts the pathways to those possibilities. Think success again and again, until there is no room in your mind for any doubt. Act boldly on your positive thoughts, and be the success you envision.
