Fitness Facts
Fit after the Fourth: Getting Started with a Fitness Program
Summer is the perfect time to get active and starting a fitness program can be a great way to improve your well-being. Not only will you be looking and feeling better, but even a moderately healthy lifestyle can significantly lower your risk for acute and chronic illnesses. What’s more, you can move toward a healthier lifestyle in just five steps...
- Start slow and build. You might be eager to get started, but exercise intelligently; start cautiously and work your way up. If you have specific considerations, consult a personal trainer for help designing a program that gradually improves your range of motion, strength and endurance.
- Timing is everything. Let’s face it, finding time in our busy lives to exercise can be a challenge. Have you tried scheduling time to exercise as you would any other appointment? At many gyms or at home, you can watch your favorite show while walking on the treadmill or read while riding a stationary bike.
- Plan to include different activities. Keep exercise boredom at bay with cross-training. Cross-training can also lower the risk of overusing one specific muscle group. Alternating your physical activities will emphasize different parts of your body.
- Ahh, reprieve. Factor in time for recovery. Often people start their regime with too much, too fast. Working out can be too much of a good thing, if you’re not cautious in conditioning your body and building stamina. Plan time between sessions for your body to rest, recover and rejoice.
- Keep a journal. A written plan is an excellent way to stay motivated. Keeping track of your foods, exercises and measurements can play a significant role in your ongoing success; ultimately allowing you to achieve your long-term goals.

FOOD Facts
The Heat is On: Tips for Healthy Summer Grilling
Before firing up the grill, try getting the cooks in your family fired up about lightening your summer menu with these tips for healthy food preparation and grilling...
- Grill chicken with the skin on to keep it moist; then remove the skin before eating to decrease the fat.
- Choose lean cuts of meat and trim away excess fat.
- Try using a rub, which is a combination of herbs, spices and seasonings rubbed into the food which can be beef, poultry or fish. Rubs do not contain oil, so they do not add any additional fat.
- Season your garden vegetables with fresh herbs, lemon juice, stock, wine, flavored vinegars or low-calorie butter sprinkles instead of regular butter or oil.
- For an extra tasty treat, fill a melon boat with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries and top with your favorite non-fat yogurt or cream topping.

What Defines the American Business Culture
During the month we stop to reflect on and celebrate our nation’s birth with flags, hot dogs and fireworks; it is worth considering our national personality at work...
Globalization brings intermingling of cultures across national boundaries; often reflected first and foremost in our business cultures. While some customs are lost to one culture and other new customs absorbed, there are still some truly American traits visible less to us than to those we work with from other cultures.
One of the most frequent observations from foreigners on the American business culture is how legally regulated we are and the impact that has upon the way we interact with one another; from a corporate to an individual level. Europeans shake their heads at the amount of do’s and don’ts inherent in our business system, wondering how we keep it all straight.
From the legalities of the hiring and termination processes to the day-to-day compliance with OSHA, BOLI, EEOC, ADA and a slew of other acronyms built to protect employees and corporations from each other, it is a complex system of legal ramifications that we tend to navigate without even thinking twice. So much so that the term “politically correct” isn’t the buzz word it once was and has instead become the standard we use to communicate with one-another at work.
At the same time, people from other countries working in the United States often comment on the informality common in the States. We tend to be less overly class conscious than Indian and Asian countries. Visiting business people from these countries often note that in American companies it can be hard to identify who is in charge. American managers often interact and lead their teams very unobtrusively; relying upon the team work and creativity of their employees to move the organization forward. Company presidents and CEOs often make a point to interact with everyone in the company, regardless of salary or job description. This trend also continues in our dress code, growing gradually more business casual year by year.
Worldwide, we are still recognized for our idealism and optimism, our entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm; these same qualities should inspire us not only this month, but every month of the year.
