Freestyle Fitness: There's no kinder, gentler place to work out than in the gravity-defying embrace of a pool of water. Swimming is easy on your joints, burns a lot of calories and makes you feel like a kid on summer vacation, all while giving you grown-up fitness and muscle tone. Water is about 12 times as dense as air, so each stroke and kick is a mini strength-training exercise. When you swim, every muscle in your body is called into action as you push against the water's resistance. What's more, regular swimming can make you more flexible. Swimming also lengthens your body to its fullest potential, strengthening and stretching otherwise tight, shortened muscles. Your lungs actually work harder against the pressure of the water, and your muscles put in overtime keeping you afloat. As a result, you're burning as many calories and conditioning your heart just as well as you would if you were doing most dry land exercises. Aim to get to the pool at least 3 days a week and remember a water bottle for keeping yourself hydrated. The more efficient your stroke, the longer you'll be able to swim. The secret is reducing your number of strokes while making maximum progress with every pull. Your power comes from your hips. As you move through the water, instead of just turning your head for air, roll your whole body, keeping your head in line with your spine, so that your mouth comes out of the water. Breathe, then roll back to the other side with the next stroke. Your head should be mostly down, with the top of your forehead leading the way. This position helps keep your hips up and is less fatiguing to your neck.  Also, if you swim during prime hours, there's a good chance that you'll have to share a lane with other people. Swim on the right-hand side of the lane, just like you would drive. If someone behind you is swimming faster, stop at the end of the lane and let them through. Most swimmers do their laps freestyle, because that's the classic swimming stroke we learn as kids and it's the easiest to pick up. But you can work your muscles in new ways and improve your overall conditioning by playing around with a variety of strokes. Flip over and try the backstroke for a few laps or learn the breaststroke or sidestroke. Your body will appreciate the new movements, and you'll be less likely to get bored. You can expect to burn approx 300 calories, work your muscles and get the psychological benefits of a sensual, stress relieving, and welcoming silencing from the usual workday noise, all from 30 minutes of a water workout. The Fact on Fats: Saturated, monounsaturated, trans and poly. Are you confused yet? You may be even if you've been keeping up on what types of fat to eat and which to shun. Let's take a closer look at the different types of fats: Monounsaturated: These "good" fats are found mainly in plant sources, like nuts, avocados and olive, peanut and canola oils. They are liquid at room temperature. Polyunsaturated: These fats, which include the healthy omega-3 fatty acids, are also found in plant oils such as safflower, sunflower, corn, flaxseed and canola oils, as well as in seafood. Polyunsaturated fats are either liquid or soft at room temperature. Essential fatty acids like alpha-linolenic and linoleic acid are also in the polyunsaturated group. These fats, which we need to get from the foods we eat, are necessary for the creation of cell walls and hormones in the body. Saturated: Though much has been made about the dangers of trans-fats, experts caution that those warnings shouldn't overshadow the potentially disastrous effects of saturated fats. Saturated fats can increase your cholesterol levels, which can lead to clogged arteries, heart attacks, strokes and obesity. These fats are found mostly in animal products. Red meat, poultry, cheese, butter and other dairy products are the main sources. Some plant products like palm, coconut and palm kernel oil are also saturated. These fats are solid at room temperature. Trans: Trans-fats are sinister because like saturated fat, they raise total cholesterol and LDL, the "bad" cholesterol levels. Trans-fats lower levels of beneficial, HDL cholesterol in the body. Also, consumption of trans-fats may inhibit the absorption of healthy fats that are necessary for the growth and functioning of vital organs. This type of fat is formed when unsaturated vegetable oils are hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated to form solid, more stable fats. Trans-fats include margarine and shortening and are found in everything from crackers, cookies, doughnuts, frozen pie crusts, deep-fried foods, and foods with chocolate coatings. Trimming the fat consists of keeping your total fat intake to around 30 percent of your total calorie intake, limiting saturated fat intake to no more than 7 to 10 percent of your intake, getting about 10 to 15 percent of total calories from monounsaturated fats and about 10 percent of calories should come from polyunsaturated fats. For an individual eating 2,000 calories a day this translates to 66 grams of total fat and no more than 16 to 22 grams of saturated fat per day. At 9 calories per gram, fats are our most caloric energy source, so we need to keep track of how much we're eating, no matter what type. Still, you'll improve your health greatly by eating more monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, including omega-3 fatty acids. Make an effort to cut back on saturated fats and try to avoid trans-fats. (Discovery Health)

Sunshine Magic: Summer is almost here. Are you stuck inside? New research reports that Vitamin D can possibly reduce your risk of cancer. The challenge is that you can get too much Vitamin D from supplements or fish oils. So, you want to know the best way to get your Vitamin D? A little simple sunshine will keep a smile on your face. In this techno-crazy world it's easy to get plugged into computers, television, and an endless supply of YouTube videos. This month’s recommendation is to get outside and play in the sun. By taking a walk in nature, going to the park for a picnic, riding your bike or enjoying a boat ride, you'll be creating more play and potentially protecting yourself. Today is the day when you can bring truly good things to your life. Today is the day for you to live with real and substantial meaning. Disconnect On Vacation: 60% of employees took some piece of mobile technology, such as cell phones, laptops, and pagers on vacation last summer, according to a recent study. The study showed that vacationing workers are the ones initiating the office contact while away. 33% of the 306 employees surveyed checked their voice mail while out and more than half of them checked their voicemail at least once per day. Employees should take work-free vacations by discussing their importance one on one, in staff meetings and in company communications. Leave a phone number for customers to contact someone at the company in your absence. Take vacations without contacting the office. This shows your co-workers that you respect their ability to function on their own. Create an email and voicemail greeting to use while on vacation. When on vacation communicate to co-workers and customers that you are out and let them know when you are expected to return and who to contact in your absence. So while on vacation be sure to unplug and tune out of the office and enjoy your time off! (Brought to you by Xenium Resources)
