SUMMER SAVINGS
The LifeBalance Program Offers Savings on Hundreds of Summer Activities

Trying to budget for summer fun? No matter what your plans, look to the LifeBalance Program to help you save.
Fitness Facts
Get Out and Move
Summer’s here and the time is right for moving on your feet. If you’ve been sedentary all winter, now is a great time to get off the couch, get outside and get active...
For many people, the biggest hurdle isn’t getting outside; it’s deciding what to do once you’re there. Although walking, running and cycling are great, there may be other activities you haven’t even considered. Many can be fun and offer a good workout.
Net Games
You don’t have to pay money or be a member of an exclusive club to play tennis. Most municipalities now have courts set aside for public use during daylight hours (some are even lighted).
With two people, a little yard or open space, a net and some minimal equipment, you’re set for either volleyball or badminton. Volleyball only requires a ball. It’s vigorous and like other net sports, gives you the chance to use a combination of skill, agility, speed and strategy. You’ll need a shuttlecock and racquets for badminton, but again, these can often be very reasonably priced. Never played before? That’s not a problem! The rules for these net games are easy and can be found on several sites online.
Retro Rules
Remember how much fun you had playing outside as a kid? You can recapture some of those old feelings with activities you really loved when you were young. Get your friends together for a rousing game of dodge ball. You can also toss a Frisbee or pull out the jump rope and do double-dutch. As an added plus, these are great games for the whole family!
If you’re on your own, don’t rule out retro fun. Pull out your old hula-hoop, crank up the music and let it spin. Hula-hoops, first popularized in the late 1950s, have undergone a resurgence in popularity during the past few years.
Keep digging in your closet until you find that old pair of rollerblades. Strap on your helmet and any protective pads, lace up the blades and head to the blacktop or sidewalk. Even if it’s been a few years or more since you were on your rollerblades, you’ll probably be surprised at how quickly it will come back to you. You also might be surprised by how many other people you find who are rollerblading too.
Go Zen
Yoga first originated in India. This centuries-old physical and mental discipline has surged in popularity across the U.S. Yoga studios have opened everywhere and yoga classes are now taught at most community centers, fitness clubs or YMCAs. When it comes to fitness, one of the most appealing aspects of yoga is that there are a number of different disciplines, varying in complexity and in intensity. If you’re considering a yoga class, ask if it would be possible for you to just observe prior to signing up. That way, you can get a sense of how physically demanding it will be.
An ancient Chinese martial art form that’s also gaining in popularity is Tai Chi Chuan. Tai Chi, which looks like a series of slow-motion movements, is said to enhance health and is practiced regularly in parks around the world. While there are DVDs available that teach Tai Chi movements, if you can, it’s best to learn the art from a qualified instructor.
Off the Beaten Path
A number of parks in the U.S. and in other countries have incorporated what are known as fitness trails. These trails include a variety of fitness stations, with guided activities such as stretching, jumping jacks, pull-ups and sit-ups. An appeal of these trails is that they’re free for anyone to use. Just a word of caution: if you’re unaccustomed to doing any physical activities, take the trail slowly and be careful doing the exercises.
With so many people owning portable GPS units, geocaching has grown in popularity. Geocaching is basically an outdoor treasure hunting activity, where participants use clues in combination with navigational settings to find hidden caches of treasure. The caches themselves can be small trinkets or more significant treasures. They’re hidden all across the U.S. and around the world (including caches hidden in the ocean). Although it’s free to go geocaching, the website that lists treasure coordinates does charge an annual fee for full navigational listings.
One thing you might want to consider is a slightly off-beat place to do a traditional activity, like walking, biking or rollerblading. Do a search for rails-to-trails multi-use trails in your area. These trails are created by a non-profit agency, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, which has been converting old railroad lines into multi-use trails around the country since its founding in 1986. The trails can stretch for miles, often through picturesque countryside and are typically closed to motorized vehicles.
With so many possibilities for exercise and so much beautiful weather, there’s really no excuse for not getting outside and enjoying yourself!

FOOD Facts
Make Your Summer Meals Spa-Tacular
Anyone who has enjoyed a spa vacation knows that having body, mind and soul nurtured is an unforgettably sublime experience. Combine the pampering body treatments with luscious cuisine and you can’t help but relax and unwind...
Ah, yes…the food. Light, yet-satisfying, delicious and healthy. According to spa chef Cary Neff, a culinary consultant for Jenny Craig, the good news is you don’t have to leave home to enjoy spa-quality meals. All it takes is a conscious desire to prepare great-tasting foods with wellness in mind. “My passion is creating healthy food featuring fine ingredients that are artfully combined and beautifully presented,” says Neff. “I think of it as a fusion of flavors, textures and nutrients to fuel a healthy body and mind.” Here are a few of his secrets:
Savor seasonings
Fresh-picked herbs like basil, cilantro, parsley and rosemary add depth to any meal, and can be the base for terrific herb vinaigrettes, purees, pestos or dry rubs.
Finesse fat
When flavor is critical, use a small amount of the real thing, such as pumpkin seeds, olive oil or walnuts. When it’s not, use fat-free sour cream, light mayonnaise or broth.
Select smart foods
Boldly flavored broccoli and red pepper, hearty black beans and corn and whole grains like quinoa and barley add taste, texture and a powerhouse of nutrients.
Look for luscious
Take the natural sweetness of ripe berries, melons and tropical fruits, accent with other fresh ingredients and create scrumptious sauces, salads, salsas and soups.

Recipe of the Month
Guacamole Made Healthy
You can't go wrong with this crowd pleasing Mexican favorite...
4 avocados, peeled and pitted
1 large or 2 small cucumbers, peeled, seeded and roughly chopped (about 1 1/3 cups)
1 large tomato, roughly chopped (about 1 cup)
Juice of 2 small limes
1/2 cup chopped scallions, white and green parts
1/2 cup firmly packed chopped fresh cilantro
1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 or 2 garlic cloves, minced
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Pinch of sea salt
In the bowl of a food processor, combine the avocados, cucumber, lime juice, scallions and cilantro. Pulse just until mixed and chunky. Add the olive oil, garlic and cayenne. Season to taste. Process until almost smooth but with a little texture. Serve immediately or transfer to a small glass bowl and cover with plastic wrap resting directly on the surface of the guacamole. Refrigerate for up to one day. Leaving an avocado pit in the guacamole will help keep it fresh.

Keeping Up Appearances
Here comes the Seussian parade of tank tops and flip-flops, cutoffs and crop tops. The sun is shining and temperatures and temptation are on the rise...
Its summer and dress codes are out the window. Suits, dress slacks and formal wool trousers are being shoved aside in favor of polos, khakis and capris. Soon, stockings will be abandoned in favor of a simple pedicure and peep toes will be peeping.
American business culture has experienced a shift toward a more casual dress code within the last ten years. In a survey from 2002, HR consulting firm William H. Mercer found that 90% of the companies they polled offered a casual dress code, a figure up from 84% in 1998. The majority of these firms allowed casual dress year round, with only one third limiting casual dress to certain days of the week or to the summer. Most managers and supervisors agree that as temperatures rise, clothes seem to shrink.
Whether a company maintains a professional or a casual tone; now is the time to revisit the dress code with managers and employees. Expectations should be clearly communicated in the company handbook or in a stand-alone policy. Managers and supervisors should strive to consistently and fairly enforce the policy, not allowing one employee to sport their flip-flops while cracking down on another employee for the same offense. An enforceable and realistic policy, combined with clear and timely communication with employees, can make all the difference as the summer heats up.

LifeBalance From Within
Let Yourself Be Yourself
If you are resisting life's goodness, then working harder at it will push that goodness farther away...
Instead, learn to let go and to allow. Simply generating more activity and energy will not help you if that energy is pointed in a negative direction. Choose to re-direct all the energy and awareness in your life toward those things you value most. If the results you are getting fail to bring fulfillment, do not seek to merely create more results. Instead, find the path that truly fulfills your purpose.
There is nothing to be gained from making life needlessly difficult. See the truth that life is beautiful, and align your energy and your actions with your very own expression of that truth. When you let yourself be yourself, richness flows easily and effortlessly and naturally through every moment. Your greatest accomplishments come from who you are. Let yourself be yourself. And you'll be as rich as anyone can ever be. (Brought to you by The Daily Motivation)
