Breaking through Plateaus
The biggest challenge when starting any nutrition and fitness program is learning how to break through plateaus...
Plateaus are a natural part of the process, so you will experience them; the key is to understand and implement the necessary tools to overcome them when you do.
Through my years of coaching I have heard four main questions and statements from clients:
- "When do you think I will plateau?"
- "I can always get an initial result, then my body stops progressing."
- "I cannot seem to lose these last 10 pounds."
- "I cannot seem to put on any muscle."
Most people will come upon a plateau like those just described. I would like to share the five tools that will enhance your education and provide you with the necessary strategies to break through these plateaus. The five tools consist of:
Tool 1: Accept Plateaus
Plateaus happen in all aspects of life; nothing can progress at the same pace forever. Sometimes, they must slow down. For example, take a look at the growth of a child, the process of building a business, or the deepening of a relationship. They all possess moments of progression followed by moments of maintenance. Accepting that plateaus will happen is part of the process.
Tool 2: Understand Your "Set Point"
Your body has an internal mechanism called a "Set Point" - similar to the temperature on a thermostat. Your genetics, gender and the choices you make determine what that set point is. When anyone starting a nutrition program initially gets a result, the most common reason is that their body is above their "Set Point." Imagine setting your home's thermostat to 80 degrees. If the temperature is at 85, the air conditioning will switch on. However, once the room reaches 80, the cooling will stop. Your body works in a similar fashion. Once you reach your "Set Point" (like the temperature on a thermostat), your body will also stop progressing unless you have the proper foundation. The key to breaking through your plateaus is to re-program your "Set Point" (adjust your thermostat).
Tool 3: Create a Foundation
Your foundation is the key to your success. The only way your body will re-program its set point is if it achieves homeostasis (internal balance). When people "diet", they cut and restrict food intake, leading to an initial result. Unfortunately dieting does not create homeostasis in your body, so the result is followed immediately by an unbreakable plateau. This leads to the "Yo-Yo" dieting syndrome. The same issue is also relevant to individuals who're looking to put on muscle. "Hard Gainers", most times will attempt to gain muscle mass by overeating, but they come up short as well - they haven't achieved homeostasis.
The key for weight and body fat loss as well as increasing muscle mass is to stabilize your blood sugar levels. This is the only way to create homeostasis and provide the body with the proper environment in which to re-program its set point. When the body is in balance (has stable blood sugar) it has all the proper nutrients and an ideal environment to achieve any goal.
Once your blood sugar is stable, what else is needed for a solid foundation? The answer is a health structure. There are six main components which, when looked after, will provide optimal balance for the body: sleep, nutrition, exercise, supplements, water, and stress management. By implementing a health structure you now have a foundation to build from and a reference point to work from. This foundation will provide your body with a stable platform to overcome any plateaus you might face.
Tool 4: Increase Efficiency
With a foundation in place, you have now created the ability to break through all plateaus. Please remember, you will face plateaus, so now you've got to focus on staying ahead of the curve. I suggest enhancing your foundation (health structure) by improving the quality of each component of your health structure - becoming more efficient. Breaking through plateaus is not necessarily about doing more; it's about doing better, becoming more efficient and diversifying what you do.
Tool 5: Stay Consistent
Consistency is the X factor that will provide you with the ability to accomplish all of your health and fitness goals. As long as Tools 1-4 are being implemented, you will continue to make progress. The closer you come to your goals, the more resistant and slower the process will be. This is a natural defense mechanism of the body. However, as long as you stay the course, and implement these strategies, you will break through all of your plateaus.
Conclusion
I think we all can agree that plateaus are extremely frustrating, and what's even more frustrating is not having the tools to break through them. You now have the tools, formula, education and vehicle to achieve all of your health and fitness goals as well as permanently break through your plateaus. My invitation to everyone is to begin implementing the plateau solution!

FOOD Facts
Plant a Row for the Hungry
Thirty-three million people, including 13 million children, go to bed hungry each night, not knowing where their next meal will come from. This statistic represents one in ten households in the United States...
The Garden Writers Association, America's oldest and largest association of professional garden communicators, hopes to reduce the problem without government programs, tax dollars or red tape. Plant a Row for the Hungry (PAR) is a public service campaign of the Garden Writers Association, whose goal is to help feed the hungry by establishing PAR networks in communities everywhere. The purpose of PAR is to create and sustain a grassroots program whereby garden writers use their media clout to encourage readers and listeners to donate their surplus garden produce to local food banks and soup kitchens. PAR began in 1995, in Anchorage, Alaska, when Jeff Lowenfels asked his readers to plant a row of vegetables for Bean's Café. Since then, the program has grown by leaps and bounds. In 2005, more than 1.5 million pounds of produce were donated, generating meals for over 5.5 million needy recipients. This contribution is significant considering that each pound of food makes four meals. PAR's success hinges on a “people-helping-people” approach.
The concept is simple. There are over 70 million gardeners in the U.S. alone, many of whom plant vegetables and harvest more than they can consume. If every gardener plants one extra row of vegetables and donates their surplus to local food banks and soup kitchens, a significant impact can be made on reducing hunger. Food agencies will have access to fresh produce, funds earmarked for produce can be redirected to other needed items and the hungry of America will have fresh, local food.
So consider planting a little something extra this year in your vegetable garden, or donate those surplus apples and raspberries that you just don¹t get around to harvesting yourself.

One-on-One Growth
As the world economy shudders and contracts, businesses across the globe are struggling to come to terms with the changing financial landscape...
Financial collapse, layoffs and work shortages have rippled across national borders, dominating our media and our thoughts. Employees and managers alike are worried about the health of their company and wonder about the likelihood of retaining their positions. In an atmosphere ripe with rumor, uncertainty and fear, there is no better time for one-on-one meetings between managers and their employees.
Monthly one-on-one meetings between employees and managers serve to develop not only the employee, their manager and their relationship, but the organization as well. Employees have the opportunity to share their frustrations, challenges and triumphs. Managers have a chance to hear their employee's concerns and provide feedback and development opportunities. Ironically, current conditions may create increased opportunities for employees. With shrinking staff and resources, many employees are being asked to stretch and grow in directions that wouldn't previously been possible. Such growth inherently demands more support from the organization.
In today's climate of tumult and anxiety, the rumor mill is flying. One-on-one meetings also serve as an opportunity for both parties to air and respond to deeper concerns about the health of the industry or company and communicate transparently. Managers owe it to their employees to really listen to their anxieties and answer questions with the truth, as much as possible. There is a great deal we don't know right now about what the future holds, and it is advisable to honestly communicate both what steps management is taking to stay on top of economic health as well as the uncertainty we are all feeling. Open and honest communication, even if the news is bad, is more important now than in any business climate.
When business is booming, it will be just as important to maintain these meetings, tempting as it may be to lay them in favor of the optimistic assumption that things are going smoothly and “no news is good news!” When playing soccer we not only want the rules, we want to know the big picture and most importantly, where the goal line is. Good managers continually remind their employees of overarching individual and organizational goals, providing achievable objectives to strive toward. Managers owe their employees frequent and continual evaluation of performance, helping them develop.

Change Is Good
Over a year ago my wife, Jeri, was diagnosed with celiac disease...
This is medical jargon for saying she is allergic to gluten (the protein found in most common grains). She's perfectly healthy now that she has eliminated gluten from her diet. We were both shocked to discover how one change could make a HUGE impact on the vibrancy of one's health. So what's my point? Well that change is good and tends to get a bad reputation. It can be hard to swallow or challenging to overcome but there are hard fast results that await celebration on the other side of change. Now change does not have to look like anything extreme like giving up gluten, your car or for gosh sakes your coffee. What if you start small, like taking the stairs, making healthy eating choices or even looking for the best parking spot farthest from the entrance? This might not look like much initially but the commitment and action alone in regards to your own health can have you feeling great.
