Reduce Stress with Pilates
An unfortunate by-product of modern day society is stress, but fortunately there are means to combat it which will help us to maintain not only a positive outlook on life, but also better health and a sense of well-being...
At its fundamental core, Pilates, a fitness system developed in the early 20th century, helps to manage and eradicate stress. The Pilates principles of relaxation, breathing, body awareness and mindfulness are just a few of the tools in the program to help restore fitness and balance to both the body and mind.
Relax with Exercise: Sounds like a bizarre idea, but Pilates exercises are performed using only the muscles required for the movement, allowing the non-working muscles to relax, refuel and regroup. This teaches the body to become selective and conserve energy by only engaging the muscles that are needed. This skill can be employed in everyday activities to alleviate undesired stress and strain.
Breathing: The very act of conscious inhalation and exhalation de-stresses the body and allows the mind a brief moment of self-awareness and calm. Various breathing techniques, such as diaphragmatic, belly and lateral breathing are taught in Pilates, which once again can be used in everyday life to help calm the body and mind.
Body Awareness and Mindfulness: In general, Pilates will help you toward an overall mindfulness and attention to the here and now. When practicing Pilates, the incorporation of heedful breathing with the flowing movement of the exercises, keeps you centered both physically and mentally. And once your Pilates class is completed, you will be left with a sensation of calm as well as feeling completely renewed and energized.
Pilates will seem to be a completely foreign fitness method when you begin; the exercises, movements, methods and even the unusual-looking equipment may seem rather odd at first. But be brave and persistent, as Pilates will lead you to not only a strong and flexible body from head to toe, but also an increased sense of calm and a less stressful outlook.

FOOD Facts
Why We Eat?
Why do we eat? Sounds like a straight forward question, but it may just be one of the most complicated...
Of course, we eat because we are hungry, but if that were the only reason, 67% of us would not be overweight. It is estimated that 75% of overeating is caused by emotional eating which occurs when we eat for reasons other than hunger. Subconsciously, it is an easy and convenient way to manage or “stuff away” emotions that are uncomfortable for us to deal with. Instead of facing the real issue, we choose to eat.
Stress, anxiety, sadness, boredom, anger, loneliness, relationship problems and poor self-esteem can all trigger emotional eating. Emotional eating may be sabotaging your weight loss efforts. Learning to recognize and manage emotional eating is vital to long-term weight loss success.
You can choose to HALT your emotional eating habits! Yes, it can be a scary notion, but it is achievable! Using the tips below and discuss your concerns with your weight loss consultant will help you understand emotional eating.
Put a HALT to your emotional eating. Next time you have a non-hunger craving ask yourself:
H - Are you truly hungry?
A - Are you angry?
L - Are you lonely or depressed?
T - Are you tired?
After you’ve evaluated your feelings, try some of these tips:
Rate it. Learn to recognize your physical hunger. Before you pop something into your mouth, stop and rate your hunger. 1 – being truly ravenous to 5 – being full. When you are at a 4 or 5, make every effort to avoid eating.
Write it away. Recording a food desire takes it out of your head and puts it on paper. Let the paper do the eating!
Exercise. Exercise helps to reduce stress and calms the body in addition to giving you more energy.
Sleep on it. Sleep deprivation can increase hunger and decrease our ability to make wise choices.
Own your success. Record 5 things you accomplish each day in your journal. Read this list aloud each night before bed, this way you can see just how great you are!

Moderation Finds Balance
Good news this month. Stress relief doesn't mean you need to eat all things organic, only train with your new barefoot shoes, spend your entire day meditating or only say nice things about people all the time...
Sometimes, it is important to flip balancing life upside down and eat some chocolate cake, relax on the couch or head out to play paintball. Learn early on that all things in moderation can be important when relieving stress and finding life balance.

Human resource
Take Control of Workplace Stress
We have all had those times at work where the pressure rises to such a level that we want to shout: “Time out!” The uncertain climate of the last year has magnified the stress many of us feel at work...
Between workplace reductions and wage freezes, employees are doing more with less. Responsibility is growing at the same rate as feelings of fear and uncertainty. This combination makes workplace stress and anxiety inevitable. Conflicting demands between work and home only adds to this stress. While some employees may see hope on the horizon, others are still feeling the pinch and wondering how to cope.
Aside from the direct physical and emotional consequences of stress on employees, employers also suffer when employees feel strained and anxious. Workplace stress costs employers billions of dollars each year due to lower productivity, absenteeism, turnover, workers’ compensation, medical insurance, etc. Now, more than even, it is vital for employees and employers to wrangle in workplace stress; and it is a shared responsibility.
Employees, first and foremost, must take responsibility for their physical and emotional well-being. You know yourself best. Take calculated steps toward improving your well-being. Identify your stressors and the habits and attitudes that amplify this stress. When change is implemented in the workplace, for example, do you immediately see the negative in the change and find yourself resisting? Once you have identified your own reactions and attitudes that create additional stress, make a concerted effort to avoid them. Finally, workplace stress can be eased when employees and managers have open lines of communication. Do your part to hone your communication skills with managers and co-workers.
Employees look to their managers to give them guidance and direction, particularly in uncertain times. Managers should make it a top priority to communicate and manage expectations with employees. Employees feel less stressed when they know what is expected of them and feel that there is an open door to communicate with their managers. Having a monthly one-on-one meeting with each employee is a way to ensure the lines of communication are open on a regular basis. Change in the workplace has also become a norm in the last year. Managers play a vital role in managing change and can usher in success by communicating with and supporting employees through these transitions. Remember to verbalize the “why” and the “how.” Why is this change important, and how will we work through this change together?
Finally, workplace stress can be reduced by finding a balance between work and life. Employees can utilize their breaks and paid time off to focus on life outside of work. (And of course, utilizing your LifeBalance Program benefits to help!) Use this time to re-energize and re-focus on what is most important. Workplace stress is manageable, but takes an equal commitment from employees and management. With a team approach, unhealthy workplace stress doesn’t stand a chance!
