Great Ways to Get Motivated: You know you've got to get moving. You resolve to park the car a few blocks from work, take the stairs and hit the gym after work. But a few weeks pass and before you know it parking spots start opening up right in front of the building, the elevator is already in the lobby, and you've worked late every night that week. It's not that you don't know how to get fit; you just can't seem to stay motivated. We all know people who are religious with their workouts. So, what's their secret? Try some of these methods to keep yourself moving: Embarrass Yourself - Make a mark on your calendar every time you make it to the gym or park. Seeing your motivation, (or lack thereof) in black and white helps keep you going. Whether you write your goals on the side of your shoe or in your LifeBalance Activity Tracker and Journal, glancing at them on a daily basis will help keep you focused and motivated. Do whatever works to make you remember what you promised yourself. Join the Club - Joining a club, team or finding an exercise partner provides a support system and someone to simply share the experience with. Often times just knowing someone will be asking you 'How's it going?' can be the difference between exercise success and failure. Love Thy Neighbor and Love Thyself - You can't leave a neighbor standing on the corner checking their watch. They know where you live. When you make a date with a neighbor to go for a run, you will be more inclined to keep it. Challenge Yourself - Working towards an event like a 5K walk, or an overnight bike trip to a faraway bed and breakfast keeps you on track. Every time you exercise you'll be closer to meeting your goal. The minute you mail in your entry fee, you'll have a whole new sense of purpose and the feeling of accomplishment you get from completing your event is like nothing else. Dance, Dance, Dance - Music is a fantastic motivator. It can push you to do more and to exercise longer, even longer than you planned. Who doesn't get a surge of energy every time they hear their favorite tune? Plus, it's the perfect excuse to get that new CD. Don't Count the Miles - Do not workout to just burn calories or lose weight. There are also other important things taking place during your workout. New found self esteem and stress reduction are just two positive aspects of many that come to mind. If you're always focusing on burning off your morning doughnut, exercise will become a chore. Try exercising for the sake of your health, not your body. Find the Fun - Forget about the no pain, no gain attitude. The mind, body and soul connection is very important, so don't forget to have fun. Pick an activity you've always loved; like biking, walking, hiking or swimming. The more enjoyable it is, the more likely you'll stick with it. Make It a Family Affair - Go for a run with the family or have them ride their bike next to you. It's a great way to be together. Who better to egg you on than the ones who love you best. Learn to Love Lycra - Buying snazzy new workout shorts or comfy new cross-trainers can really get you fired up to work out. Once you realize how much better the right equipment makes a workout, you will be on track. Dive for Dollars - Money can be the ultimate motivator. Put a dollar in a jar every time you make it to the gym. At the end of a month, treat yourself to a massage. You'll be at the gym more often than the trainers. It's About Time - Mood motivates to work out, so timing is everything. If you aren't up for a workout don't feel guilty about postponing. On the other hand, exercise has been known to improve a bad mood. Work out your aggressions in the gym instead of at home or work. (FoodFit)

Beating the Cooking Blues: We live in a hectic, fast-paced world and sometimes it would be nice to come home to dinner instead of coming home and then preparing dinner. But eating out or ordering in is usually not a healthy solution. Restaurant portions are two to three times larger than recommended portion sizes and higher in calories, fat and sodium than home cooked meals. Batch cooking is a simple way to cut down your dinner preparation time. Try cooking multiple servings of your favorite meals on the weekends and freeze single or family sized portions to eat later during the week. This way you can pull out your favorite meals, throw them in the microwave and in a few minutes you have a healthy, home cooked dinner. Add a salad or veggies that you can steam in the microwave and steamed brown rice for a well-balanced meal. There are also companies that provide the kitchen facilities, ingredients and packaging for batch cooking. You can prepare a week worth of meals in pre-packaged, ready-to-freeze containers. You also have the option of dividing your meals into smaller portions if you aren’t feeding an entire family. You can also turn your night of cooking into a group event with friends. Crockpot cooking is another really simple solution. There are tons of cookbooks entirely devoted to slow cooking. Crockpot cooking couldn’t be easier. You throw all the ingredients into the pot, turn it on and you can come home to a prepared dinner. Or try preparing dinner together with your spouse or family. This can be a fun way to bond and decompress after a hectic workday. It enables you to refocus on each other and create a healthy, home cooked meal at the same time. Experimenting in the kitchen together and trying out new recipes together can be fun and exciting. (FoodFit)

“Live each year as it passes; breathe the air, taste the fruit and resign yourself to the influences of each.” - Henry David Thoreau.

The Game of Time: When was the last time you heard someone say, "I wish I had more time?" Although time has been measured for the last 5,000 years, doesn't it seem like time is speeding up? Is it possible that we are losing connection to our natural rhythms of when to eat, work, play and sleep? I stopped wearing a watch about ten years ago, because I started to become time obsessed. I found myself in a constant state of judgment about a few numbers – like...ten, three and zero and how I should definitely have more done by now! If you find your LifeBalance starting to wane towards time obsession, remember to take a break this month from the game of time and reconnect to some of your natural rhythms. (Brought to you by Jason

Ballet by the Numbers: A male ballet dancer lifts over 1-1/2 tons worth of ballerinas during performances. Most ballerinas wear out 2-3 pairs of pointe shoes per week. Some tutus cost up to $2,000 to make. The same tutus require 60-90 hours of labor and over 100 yards of ruffle. When 18th century dance company managers had trouble with their dancers missing rehearsals or performances, they had a stronger recourse than today; they threw performers in jail.

Believe In It: Do you truly believe in the value of your own pursuits? If so, there's not much that will be able to stop you. If not, why are you wasting your precious time on them? Belief in what you're doing will make you vastly more enthusiastic, resourceful and effective. It will let you see valuable opportunities where others just see annoying problems. Your belief will enable you to persevere through the difficult times and grow stronger in the face of challenges. Perhaps you think that doing what you believe in is a luxury you cannot afford. After all, the bills do have to be paid. Yes, indeed, the bills must be paid. And the very best way to do that is by putting your efforts where they will create the most value. If you don't believe in what you're doing at the moment, then map out a plan that will take you from where you are right now to where you can truly believe in what you're doing. Once you make that connection, even though nothing else has changed, you've suddenly added the power of belief to your efforts. Believe in what you're doing. Believe in where you're going. You can find a way. Find it, hold on to it and be unstoppable. (Daily Motivator)

Fido Goes to Work: Chewies on the floor of the conference room. Scratching posts in the lobby. A tennis ball in the hallway. These sights may become all the more common in years to come, along with the sound of barking and purring in America’s businesses. We have always been a nation of animal lovers. Longer hours and lengthy commutes coupled with a shifting priority list moving pets ever closer to the top means a furry new co-worker might be sharing your cube space sometime soon. A study in 2006 found that one in five U.S. companies allow pets at work. We have a nationwide “Bring Your Pet to Work Day” (usually the fourth Tuesday in June) and many companies list their openness to having pets in the workplace as one of their most appreciated employee benefits. 73 percent of participants in a survey felt that having pets in the office created a more productive work environment. 27 percent of the participating companies had a decreased absenteeism rate. Every company surveyed also felt having pets in their workplace enabled their employees to feel more relaxed while at work. Employees experienced lower blood pressure, lower stress levels and improved emotional and physical health with the advent of their pet friendly work environment. Many took their dog for a walk at lunch and enjoyed the exercise as well as the break from their time in the office. Employers noticed a 58 percent increase in their employees staying late when they had their pets in the office; alleviating the need to rush home to let the dog out and bringing a little bit of home to work. Dogs also proved a crime deterrent in retail locations. Customers responded to the presence of a cat on the counter with enthusiasm and warmth. Pets enabled employees to build immediate personal relationships with both coworkers and clients, leading to happier people and hard working pets. (Brought to you by Xenium)
