Keep Your Brain Sharp

As the school year starts, you are probably paying close attention to your budget. Adding, subtracting, multiplying and reading over every receipt? As you get older this 'taxing' math can get more and more difficult. With old age comes significant loss of brain tissue. But, can this process be slowed down? Stopped? Or even reversed? Could diet and exercise play a role in the brain's health as well?...

For years, researchers overlooked the role that worldly experience played in brain formation and pointed towards genes as the deciding factor in brain development. Cognitive development was seen to end with childhood. The rest was fate. And this made sense, considering brain tissue can't regenerate after a certain age. Now a spate of studies shows that mental exercise can have profound effects on mental capacity. Brain tissue can be made more resilient to injury. In the same way, we can also "turn on" different areas of the brain by igniting neural connections that were previously non-existent.

The Benefits of Mental Gymnastics

In the early 1960s researchers found that animals raised in an environment filled with interactive stimuli, including toys, possessed a thicker and heavier cerebral cortex than those raised in an empty laboratory cage. Some of these changes occur not only during the brain's early growth stage, but also in later years. On the flip side, severe lack of mental exercise and stressful experiences limit the brain's resilience and development.

In a recent study at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, researchers found that mentally active seniors reduced their risk of dementia. During the course of the 21-year study, researchers followed more than 450 people over the age of 75. Investigators tracked how many of the participants developed Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia and looked at what activities they had engaged in. They found that participants who stimulated their minds with simple activities decreased the risk of dementia by as much as 75 percent.

Similarly, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine adds to mounting evidence that mentally stimulating activities such as: reading, playing cards, board games and doing crossword puzzles may prevent or minimize memory loss from aging.

The Benefits of Physical Gymnastics

Many studies have shown that physical exercise, when done in tandem with mental exercise, seems to slow the loss of brain tissue. It's quite simple; exercise increases blood flow to your whole body, including your brain. Exercise delays or sometimes prevents these specific aging-related changes in your brain. And in some cases, exercise may even provide memory improvement.

How much exercise do you need to reap the benefits of a smarty pants? Thirty-minutes a day has long been touted as the concrete number for physical health, but if you're just getting started, don't worry about the time. One study found that a few fifteen-minute exercise sessions a week reduced older adults' risk of dementia. The benefit was greatest to those participants who hadn't exercised previously.

Moral of this story - It won't take a big time commitment to perk up your brain and it will be a lot of fun doing it. So get started and feel your brain get sharper.

FOOD Facts
Back to School and Eating Right

It's back to school for kids, whether it's elementary school or college. Busy schedules can make eating right tough. Don't let the rush of the school compromise healthy eating for your family...

Routines change, but keep your family on-track with healthy eating habits. Kids don't watch calories, but they do watch you, so if you want them to eat right, you need to show them how it's done. Be a healthy role model now and they'll make good eating habits to carry with them for their whole lives. Here are some tips for you and your family to eat healthy:

  • Pack it up - Save calories and your budget by packing a lunch every day. A packed lunch is usually better than eating cafeteria food because you always know what's in it. Make it fun and pack lunches with the kids, for some family time and to teach them good habits. Peanut butter on celery is a classic favorite. Round it out with a turkey sandwich and a crispy apple. Or try fruit and cheese subs with healthy breads.
  • Make it a variety show - As with most everything else, your kids will want to copy what you eat. Shoot for a wide variety of fruits and veggies. Choose from every color of the rainbow for a range of nutrients with many health benefits. Try new foods regularly so your kids will be open to eating new foods at friends' houses and when they're away at college.
  • Remember the snacks - Be sure to include mid-morning snacks in your lunch bag and your kids'. Healthy snacks keep energy and attention levels up to power through a busy day. There are many nutritious easy-to-pack choices, like string cheese, yogurt, fresh fruit or baked tortilla chips with salsa.

Human resource
Employees Going Back To School

Watching our 401(k) slowly tank over the last few years leaves most of us feeling that the most widely recognized employee investment vehicle is taking us for a wild, stomach-churning ride...

When the market turns volatile, many employees reduce or entirely cease contributing their portion of 401(k) contributions. Now might be the perfect time to explore another type of investment for your future; education.

Some employers offer an educational assistance program. In 1978 the IRS created a tax provision which enables employers to pay for tuition, books and fees up to $5,250 for undergraduate and graduate level education for employees on a tax-free basis. Establishing an educational assistance program enables employers to invest in their employees and has shown a marked increase in employee loyalty, satisfaction and their likelihood to remain with the company long term. Employers also benefit from the developing skills and abilities of their employees.

Educational assistance programs need to be well thought-out, documented and extended equitably to the workforce. Best practice is to set some sort of qualifying threshold for grades and a relevancy to the employee’s current or future career within the organization. Many companies establish an annual maximum they will contribute per employee and require an employee remain with the company for a certain period of time before and after receiving reimbursement for their coursework. A valuable and often overlooked benefit, education, more than your 401(k), can be counted upon to remain with you in the long run.
